1783 Treaty of Paris

File:PreliminaryTreatyOfParisPainting.jpg    After the Battle of Yorktown only a few minor battles took place. Britain has run out of money, so they decided that they would start trying to talk peace with us.We eventually reached an agreement with the help of Benjamen Franklin. We signed the Treaty of Paris which said the Great Britain recognized the freedom, and Independence of America. In the treaty the boundaries of the new country were set.Britain also accepted the Americans rights to settle and trade west of the original boundaries of the thirteen colonies

A new country 1783/ 1782

File:Rev collage.png   The war has ended, we are a new, free, and independent country. All the patriot soldiers are home once again. I can not thank the men who fought to make this country happen enough. I also thank the women who helped out. Now that all the men have returned home the children are asking where their own father is. It is very late into the night now, but I am going to tell them about this tragedy in the morning. My oldest son will now take over his jobs. We must also plan a funeral for the man who was so brave and went off to fight for his love of this land. I am tired now, and must plan how I will tell the children. As of acouple of days ago the year of 1783 we are a freed country, and i am quite enjoying it.

The Battle of Blue Licks, happened today. In the West Appalachians, the British and their Indian allies, the Wyandot, Ottawa, Ojibwa, Shawnee, Mingo, and Delaware inflicted heavy casualties and forced the retreat of Daniel Boone and the Kentucky militia. In response to this, George Rogers Clark leads Kentucky militia on an expedition against the British into Ohio country. These are often considered the last formal battles of the Revolutionary War. This is major for our colony considering it happened in our colony.

Purpleheart.jpg   Today I have Recived word that George Washington, the leader of the Continental Army has created a badge to recognize soliders for their military merit. I was told that for all the hard work that husband did for this cause he would recive a Purple Heart. Although he is not here to know it I will keep it in a frame, and hang it o the wal over our bed. I will always remember what a great man he was. This was one of the first military badges ever created.

1781 The Battle of Yorktown part 1 /October 19 1781

File:Surrender of Lord Cornwallis.jpg   Today I received word that my husband was fighting in the Battle of Yorktown and had died.I am now a single parent of three.I feel that I should tell you exactly what happened. The war was going awful for us we were low on supplies, money, and man power. By bringing in the foreign countries to help us had not worked as planed. As I had said it was going badly the British had the most of the South, New York, and Philadelphia. It hurt us badly when Benedict Arnold turned on us and began to help the British. We learned the General Cornwallis
was taking his troops to Yorktown, Virgina. George Washington decided that it was worth a shot to try to capture them one more time. We happened to be in New York at the time so we blocked the escape of the British. We surrounded them, there was no escape! Then the fighting began it went on for weeks and eventually tired the British. In the mean time my husband was shot in the chest by a British officer. Washington was planning to attack the British while they were weak..........................

The Marquess Cornwallis   Today, I was told that the last major battle of the war was fought and won by the patriots
Tired and angry, General Cornwallis sent a drummer and a soldier with a white flag of surrender to Washington’s camp. The Patriots took .  We took eight thousand British troops prisoner. This is great to hear about ,so maybe this awful war will be over

1780 a failed attack / 1780 the women

File:FrancisMarionSwampFox.jpg
also known as the swamp fox
Today I heard that a patriot force tried to force some British out of South Carolina, a fellow middle colony.Horatio Gates had only half as many soldiers as he had planned for, and most were tired and hungry. In the heat of battle, many panicked and ran. The Patriot attack quickly fell apart. Of some 4,000 American troops, only about 700 escaped. This was a sorry attempt of an attack, many people were upset because this made us look poor and disorganized.
As a result of this fail southern Patriots switched to swift hit-and-run attacks known as guerrilla warfare. No Patriot is better at this style of fighting than Francis Marion. He organized Marion’s Brigade, a group of guerrilla soldiers. Marion’s Brigade used surprise attacks to disrupt British communication and supply lines. Despite their great efforts, the British could not catch Marion and his men. This was good for us because it surprised the British greatly. My husband loved doing this and told the boys that when he gets home he is going to tell them all about it.

File:Sarah Franklin Bache1793.jpg   Today I learned that there is a group of women that organized a campaign to raise money to get the men of the Continental Army clothing. So far they have raised three hundred thousand dollars. The female patriots who formed this campaign are Esther DeBerdt Reed and Sarah Franklin Bache, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin. I believe that this is a great cause, and even though i am part of a poor family I will be sending some money to contribute to this cause.

1779

One day my oldest son came home from school and began to talk about what he learned at school that day.He began to recite what his teacher had told him but got some of the information wrong, so I began to explain to my children that that the Native Americans controlled all lands west of the Appalachian Mountains. Both the British and the Patriots tried to enlist these groups in their cause. George Rogers Clark volunteered to lead the western campaign. Clark had been a surveyor along the Ohio and Kentucky rivers. By the time the war broke out, he knew the lands of the Midwest well. Clark created an army from the scattered settlements in the area. One of the best-known groups is the Over Mountain Men, a band of settlers from present-day Tennessee.

September 25, 1779 John Paul Jones

We the Patriots owe much of our success to a naval hero by the name of John Paul Jones. Jones had once been considered an outlaw in Scotland After accidentally killing the leader of a mutiny, he fled to America and added Jones to his name. When the war broke out, Jones volunteered his services to the newly created navy. He quickly established himself as a brave and clever sailor. Considered a pirate by the British

Jones captured many British supply ships. The French greatly admired Jones. When France entered the war in 1778, French leaders presented him with a small fleet of seven vessels to command. He named his flagship Bonhomme Richard (“Gentleman Richard”) in honor of Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac. Jones’s most famous victory was the capture of the British warship Serapis on September 23, 1779. Early in the battle, the British knocked out the heaviest artillery on the Bonhomme Richard. The battle continued for more than two hours. Finally the Americans wore down the British, who surrendered at 10:30 p.m.The Continental Navy used fewer than 100 ships over the course of the war. Yet the British lost more than 200 ships to the small but effective American naval force. He was such a large help and I am so glad that my Husband got to meet him and learn from him.

May 1778

File:Surrender of General Burgoyne.jpg   Benjamin Franklin, a skilled and experienced diplomat, had gone to France in 1776 to ask for support from King Louis XVI. Finally, the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 persuaded the French king that the colonists could win the war. Not until then did the king agree to an alliance with the Patriots.
I received a massage from my husband that the Continental Congress ratified the treaty of support with France. The French have been helping the Patriots all along with supplies and ammunition. After the treaty became official, the French increased the level of supplies and agreed to provide soldiers and ships. The French naval support will be a key ingredient in defeating the British. This helped our side out tremendously because of the fact that we were getting help for our cause.
